Abstract

This article provides hitherto unknown archival documents relating to the rich musical life in the free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. Most noteworthy are 13 inventories of musical prints and manuscripts from the time between 1592 and 1697 (transcribed and commented in the appendix). The most important of these inventories was compiled in 1688 and itemizes the manuscript collection of the Schweinfurt cantor Johann Nikolaus Eccard (1636-87). This enormous collection of more than 400 pieces (by masters such as Wolfgang Carl Briegel, Georg Ludwig Agricola, Johann Rosenmüller, several members of the Bach family, and others) served as the performance repertoire for Eccard's successor Georg Christoph Bach.
