Instructions for Authors

Step 1. Select article type

Several types of papers can be submitted to the Journal of Vietnamese Environment, please select the most appropriate model and follow the suggestions for the preparation of your manuscript:

Research articles
This article type describes the most recent findings on environmental research. The content of the research papers shall include relevant and original work that has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Build your manuscript using the standard structure of research articles: Introduction | Materials and methods | Results | Discussion | Conclusions. In the ‘Introduction’ state the objectives of the work and provide an appropriate background of the research topic. Describe your working methodology in the ‘Materials’ and methods section and only refer to methods already published. The ‘Results’ section should be clear and concise focusing on the paper’s objectives (you may combine ‘Results’ and ‘Discussion’). The ‘Conclusions’ section should be rather short and list the most important findings. The length of research articles should be no longer than 4,000 words (please consider that each figure and table count for 200 words).

Short communications
The short communications are concise reports representing a significant contribution to the journal’s areas of interest but do not include the whole research work (a short communication paper can be used for example to announce preliminary results, apparition of a new governmental decree etc.). The structure of short communications depends on the content of the manuscript, a standard abstract being included in all cases. A short communication can refer to an article already published, where the author wants to add new findings and results without writing a completely new paper. In this case, the abstract shall contain the full reference of the previously published work, its main findings and the new results added by the new manuscript. The rest of the paper does not necessarily need to follow the standard format (Introduction – Materials and methods – Results – Conclusions) but clear and concise structuring is required. For any other use of short communications (for example announcing new research findings), the abstract shall contain the summary of the whole manuscript, including (but not resumed to): state of the art and motivation, main objectives, methodology, expected output etc.

Event reports
The event report format can be used to briefly describe the content and main output of public events such as conferences, workshops, training courses etc. A manuscript submitted to JVE can also report about a past or still occurring event (conference, workshops, training courses, important meetings etc.). Important: please do not submit reports about future events (for this you can use the Short Communication format). The report must be preceded by an abstract where the headlines of the event are emphasized: the date and place, main organizers, event context, topics or short agenda, target groups or participants etc. The structure of the manuscript can then follow the event’s agenda, with subsequent sections and subsections for each of the event’s sessions. The main results shall be wrapped-up in a ‘Conclusions’ section.

Review papers
The purpose of review papers is to succinctly review the recent progress in a particular topic. The author of a review paper shall therefore provide the reader with an understanding of the topic by discussing the results presented in other recent research studies (the review paper can also provide the review of a book). The review article is expected to provide a summary and/or a synthesis of the outcomes of some selected contributions being already published by other authors. The structure of a Review paper doesn’t have to follow the standard structure of a Research paper. However, the motivation that triggered the author to write such a review shall be clearly emphasized, together with a description of the framework covered in the review (in other words, what is the process/topic covered in the review). Please provide your opinions in a neutral and objective manner, personal attacks to other authors are not tolerated. Wrap-up the conclusions of your review in a dedicated section and be sure that you listed all the cited articles.

Step 2. Prepare your manuscript

Essential information
Title. The title must be concise, informative and able to reveal the content of the entire work.
Author names and affiliation. Use family name first followed by the first and middle name (if any). Example: Curtis, Jonh or Nguyen, Vu Tuan. Write the full name and postal address of the affiliated institution, including phone and fax number, and email address of each author.
Corresponding author. Emphasize with the *-sign the corresponding author and make sure that the contact details are updated and accurate.

Abstract
The abstract must be concise and should state briefly the objectives of the work, the main results and major conclusions. Avoid referring to other articles and do not use abbreviations, acronyms and formulas. The maximum length of the abstract is 300 words.

Keywords
Provide a maximum of 6 keywords right after the abstract. Select only relevant keywords, they will be used for indexing the article’s content.

Main body
Divide your article into clearly defined sections and number them with 1.1 (then 1.1.1, 1.1.2 etc), 1.2 etc. Do not include the abstract in the numbering. When cross-referring to subdivisions use also the numbering, not only the section name. Manuscripts should be typed single-column, 1.5 line spaced on one side of the page of a 21.0 x 29.7 cm (A4 format) white paper using the Times New Roman font of size 12. The pages should be numbered a margin of 2.5 cm shall be provided for all sides of the document. Please download and use the Journal template to format your submission file.

Graphics and images
Embed your figures in the text in the place where they should appear and caption them using Figure 1, Figure 2 etc. Use only clearly visible graphics and make sure that you own all the rights of the respective image. In the case that you decide to use the artwork of someone else, you need to provide an additional acknowledgement of the respective author (please contact the Journal Editor for more details). Try to avoid using scanned artwork and adjust the size in such a way that it is easy visible on A4 format paper. Grey-scaled as well as color graphics are accepted. Use only the Times New Roman font size 10 for any text or numbers included in the graphic.

Tables
Number tables consecutively in accordance with their appearance in the text. Place footnotes to tables below the table body and indicate them with superscript lowercase letters. Ensure that the data presented in tables do not duplicate results described elsewhere in the article.

Footnotes
Footnotes should be used sparingly and only at end of each page. Number them consecutively throughout the article, using superscript Arabic numbers.

References
Please ensure that every reference cited in the text is also present in the reference list (and vice-versa). Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended but may be included if they are very relevant to the work. For web references, the full URL shall be given and the date when the reference was last accessed and shall be activated (ready to click). The style of the reference in the article body shall respect the following rules: for one author, include only the family name followed by the year (example: Jobs, 2010); for two authors: both family names followed by the year (example: Jobs and Adams, 1996); for three of more authors: the family name of the first author followed by et al. and the year (example: Jobs et al., 2011). The reference list shall be placed at the end of the article with the references in alphabetical order. The general APA Guidelines shall be used for formatting the references (example of reference to a journal: Jobs, S., King, L., Adams, J., 2010. The management of environmental pollution. J. Viet. Env. 12(1), 76-84).

Hidden data
Be sure that you remove the hidden data from your document such as track changes, comments etc. In MS Word for example, select the ‘Accept all changes in document’ and save the text as ‘Final’ before submission. For an automated process download and install the Office 2003/XP Add-in: Remove Hidden Data.

Language
The main language for all Journal accepted articles is English. However, the title and the abstract are to be translated also in Vietnamese language (the authors are responsible for the translation). For the title, insert a new line for the Vietnam translation below the English version. The abstract text in Vietnamese shall be placed below the text in English.
